My girlfriend 'commissioned' me to paint something for her to take back to school in Scotland, and this is what we came up with. It's a airbrush painting done by George Petty for Esquire back in the early 40's. I'm going to redo it using gouache instead, and thought it would be interesting to document the process here.
I use cold press 110lb illustration board, and I cut it down to 16"x20" so it will easily fit in a standard frame. I like to wet both sides of the board down pretty good and let it dry flat to start. This relaxes the fibers and helps prevent it from curling when wet paint is applied later.
